Does Water Really Expire?

No, we're not talking about the water itself, but rather the microbial organisms (i.e. bacteria, viruses, germs) that can build up from water storage tanks in homes, cottages, boats, recreational vehicles (RVs), you name it. The real question is, does water have an expiration date? And if so, how soon?

A peer-reviewed research study conducted by the American Water Works Association observed and compared four separate water tanks, each with varying materials such as polyethylene and fiberglass, to see if there are changes to the chemistry of water stored over a span of time. Here are some of the notable findings:

  • Storage Time vs Water Quality - Results showed that the water underwent significant changes in its chemical characteristics after being stored for as little as 4 to 7 days, mostly due to the loss of chlorine residual and the increase of pH resulting in an increase in HPCs (Heterotrophic Plate Counts, used to measure the overall bacteriological quality of drinking water)
  • Non-Continuous Flow vs Water Quality - The study suggests that the increase in bacterial species from the high HPC measurement may be attributed to their ability to grow slowly under low-nutrient water conditions. This suggests that either water storage should be minimized, or an alternative way to pursue clean water is necessary.

At Acuva, we believe that the cleanest water is at the point of use, meaning that water should be purified just before you drink. Think about it, we demand the freshest of our food, and we all want to dig into our deliciously prepped dinner the moment it is ready. When we store filtered water in water storage tanks, we are essentially refrigerating our freshly-cooked dinner and microwaving it later.

With the emergence and proven technology of ultraviolet (UV) and light emitting diode (LED), the combining effects (UV-LED) provide safe drinking water while minimizing power usage, maintenance and maximizing longevity.
