Job Summary

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Senior Mechanical/NPI Engineer will be responsible for the detail mechanical and system design of Acuva’s consumer and OEM air and water purification devices and identifying scalable technologies that will enable innovative design solutions at competitive cost and utmost reliability.

He/she will collaborate with the R&D, engineering, and production teams as well as suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure that the designs are aligned with product specifications, suitable for medium/large scale manufacturing and can be manufactured reliably.

The Senior Mechanical/NPI Engineer will evaluate requirements, implement design ideas and analysis, and conduct standard practices such as DFMEA, DFA & DFM with the R&D/engineering teams, suppliers, CM’s and ODM’s.  He/she will also be proficient in simulation tools for FEA and Moldflow, as a minimum the candidate must be able to interpret the results from simulations.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in consumer product design, sealing mechanism and custom manufacturing technologies such as injection molding, stamping, extrusion, casting and CNC as well as knowledge of part finishing processes for functional and cosmetic requirements.

Self-motivated and driven to get results on time with a focus on repeatable quality, the Senior Mechanical/NPI Engineer will be an effective communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills (English), and able to make simple accurate recommendations when confronted with complex time-sensitive situations.

This position is based in-office at our Burnaby Head Office location.

What you will be doing:
  • With the R&D team conceptualize and create mechanical designs for feasibility
  • Working closely with Supply Chain, validate tooling DFM, Tool costs and part costs for custom designed mechanical parts
  • Develop detail mechanical and system designs of OEM and consumer water disinfection appliances
  • Review product designs for risk and provide risk mitigation plans for the implementation of New, Unique, Different or Difficult (NUDD’s)
  • Clearly report and recommend design improvements based on theoretical analysis and discussions with suppliers, engineering, and operations team
  • Manage PDM part management systems and Engineering Change Request processes
  • Define protocols and criteria for validation of mechanical parts and products
  • Root cause analysis for device failures and propose design/process corrective actions
  • Technical interface between Acuva and vendor partners for new product development and introduction
  • Conceptualize and design product test jigs to streamline mass volume production of an optomechanical product line
  • Working with the design responsible scientists, engineers, & quality personnel to maintain smooth design process and product function/reliability
  • Visit Acuva’s vendors locally or overseas to setup, improve and verify proper production practices are followed (must be able to travel internationally)
  • Additional duties as required to assist with day-to-day coordination of R&D and engineering team activities
Skills you will need:
  • Practical mechanical hands-on design, computer analysis, prototyping, knowledge of machining, forming, welding, and joining techniques for mechanical devices
  • Skilled in mechanical part selection from off-the-shelf vendors (eg. O-rings, seal materials, adhesives, gaskets, and fasteners)
  • Creative and efficient mechanical design and solid modeling skills
  • Fast and accurate print drawing and BOM creation skills with knowledge of tolerancing and drawing conventions
  • Design for manufacturing expertise and supporting tools FMEA, concept selection, design of experiment
  • Knowledge of tooling principles and the ability to manage and negotiate tooling schedules and deliverables
What we are looking for:
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in product design, sealing technologies, and manufacturing support roles
  • Strong hands-on experience in design, design analysis and manufacturing technologies implementation
  • Must be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial-spirited, fast-paced and constantly changing environment with a desire to make a strong impact on the business
  • Background in a start-up, fast-paced, high-technology design and manufacturing environment
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an established and accredited post-secondary institution
It would be great if you had:
  • Knowledge of designing for injection molded fabrication process
  • Knowledge of sealing mechanism, pressure vessel design, high pressure sealing technologies
  • Experience working in high volume OEM and consumer product design and manufacturing in India
  • Experience in Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen
